PDP counters Umahi's allegation, lists southeast’s benefits for supporting party

- The PDP has reacted to Governor Umahi's allegation that it has been unfair to the people of the southeast

- Responding to the allegation, the opposition party released the list of juicy political positions it gave the southeast when it was the ruling party

- Umahi who defected to the APC on Tuesday, November 17, had claimed that his action was motivated by the unjust treatment of the Igbo by the PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the allegation of unfairness to the southeast made against it by the governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi.

Governor Umahi who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, November 17, had cited alleged injustice being meted out to the southeast as the reason for his action.

However, the PDP in a statement on Wednesday, November 18, faulted Umahi’s allegation, saying it has been fair to the southeast region.

According to ThisDay, the major opposition party released a document which includes details of top political posts held by the Igbo under the party’s successive administrations from 1999 to 2015 when it was the ruling party.

Legit.ng gathers that the document was released by the PDP's national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

Various offices Igbo had occupied since 1999, according to the PDP's document, includes:

Five Senate presidents

The PDP said since 1999, it had given the position of the president of the Senate to Igbo politicians five times.

The Senate presidents of Igbo extraction listed in the document are Senators Evans Enwerem, Chuba Okadigbo, Anyim Pius Anyim, Adolphus Wabara and Kenechukwu Nnamani.

One deputy Senate president

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who held the position for 12 years, comes from the southeast.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives

Hon Emeka Ihedioha who is from Imo state in the southeast was also given the position of the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives under the PDP government.

Party chairmen

The PDP also stated two key politicians from the southeast had been elected to occupy the chairmanship position of the party. They are Chief Vincent Ogbulafor and Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo.

Chief of Army Staff

Under the PDP administration, a southeasterner, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika was appointed as Chief of Army Staff.

CBN Governor

Dr Charles Soludo, from Imo state, also served as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the PDP government

Minister of Finance

Under the PDP administration, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was also appointed as the minister of finance.

INEC Chairman

The PDP also noted that it appointed Prof. Maurice Iwu as the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) when it was the ruling party.

Secretary to the Government of Federation

Under the PDP, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim was Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF).

Vice Presidential Candidate

The PDP noted that in 2019, it also zoned the position of its vice presidency to the southeast and picked Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state.

Meanwhile, the PDP added that Governor Umahi was acting state chairman, state chairman, deputy governor and now governor for two terms under its platform.

The opposition party also stated Governor Umahi’s younger brother, Chief Austin Umahi, was national vice-chairman, southeast.

Concluding the statement, the PDP asked Governor Umahi what the APC which he has just joined has done for the people of the southeast.

Umahi left PDP for personal reason, says Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike has reacted to Umahi's defection, saying the Ebonyi state governor left the PDP to pursue his presidential ambition.

The Rivers state governor also disclosed that Umahi's defection did not come to the PDP members as a surprise because he was already building a political romance with the ruling party over time.

He told Governor Umahi to retract the statement that he left the PDP because of the injustice against the southeast region by the opposition party, saying he will not allow his "friend" to "blackmail and tell lies to people".
