- EFL organisers have concluded plans to allow Championship, League One and Two clubs make five substitutes
- This new development will go on for the rest of the 2020-21 season
- However, this excludes Premier League teams unless they have a rethink about their earlier decision
English Football League organisers have approved five substitutions for the remainder of the 2020-21 Championship games.
This new development also covers the League One and League Two clubs matches but Premier League teams are left out for now.
The stakeholders were said to have reached this agreement in a bid to lower the rate of injuries among players.
Also, Championship clubs are now permitted to name nine players on their substitute lists while the Leagues One and Two bosses will have seven players on the bench.
A statement from the EFL organisers as quoted by SunSport reads:
"Following consultation with clubs, the EFL Board has agreed to increase the permitted number of substitutes to five in all Sky Bet EFL.
"[The new rule will begin in] fixtures taking place from 12pm on Friday, November 20 for the remainder of the 2020-21 season."
Despite allowing nine players on the bench and five substitutes in the elongated 2019-20 season, the rule has been relaxed this term as the Premier League teams have reverted to the three-sub rule, with just seven named on the bench.
Top clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and the Manchester teams would have wanted the new rule to continue but they were outvoted in August as 11 clubs wanted them to return to the three subs per game.
Defending champions Liverpool have been hit the hardest, with nine first-team players - including their entire first-choice back-four - all injured and this may force the clubs to have a rethink.
Legit.ng earlier reported that English Premier League clubs have agreed that the number of eligible substitutes during a game should increase from three to five when the season restarts.
The 2019/2020 EPL season which was suspended since mid-March due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic had resumed on June 17.
Clubs approve the temporary change from three substitutes to five as it is believed that players who have not been in competitive action will be struggling to regain their fitness.
