More recently, the star was featured in a discussion she had with her mother with a news outlet.

The chat saw Selena open up about how she found social media empowering because she could control what she was saying and be able to directly talk to her fans about her struggles without second-hand interpretations.

Speaking to TheNewsette.com, Selena said the first time she shared her story, it became manipulated:

"But I got so angry that my story was twisted into so many different things."

msn.com reported Selena as also having mentioned that once she had spoken openly on her own social media, there was no opportunity for people to distort her feelings or misquote her words:

"I think that was my moment when I knew [nobody] was going to take my story away from me. On my own social media, I got to tell the truth. And once I started claiming my own name, I think people understood my mental health journey."
