- The Peoples Democratic Party has decided to move on with life after Governor Dave Umahi defected to the APC
- The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP has constituted a state caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the party in Ebonyi state
- Last-minute efforts by the PDP NWC to persuade Umahi to stay back in the party was unsuccessful
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has constituted a state caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the party in Ebonyi state in line with the provisions of its constitution.
This follows the dissolution of the Ebonyi state exco by the NWC earlier after Governor Dave Umahi defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Honourable Fred Udeogu will serve as the committee chairman, while Barrister Luke Nwkwegu will serve as secretary.
Dr Gideon Osi will serve as publicity secretary, Honourable James Alaka is the new organising secretary, Mrs Amaka Igboke will serve as women leader, while Barrister Mudi Irenede is the new legal adviser.
A statement from Kola Ologbodiyan, the PDP spokesman, said the decision of the NWC is pursuant to the powers conferred on it by the provisions of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended).
“All our leaders, members, and teeming supporters in Ebonyi state and the southeast are by this guided accordingly.”
Recall that the NWC of the PDP recently summoned an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting when rumours of Umahi leaving for APC thickened.
The meeting was slated for Thursday, November 19 at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja.
Similarly, the Board of Trustees (BoT), the highest advisory organ of the party, was also scheduled to meet on Wednesday, November 18 at the same venue on the matter.
Umahi, however, announced his defection before both meetings were held by the PDP leaders.
Legit.ng had earlier reported that the APC officially recognised the defection of Umahi by declaring that the state is now connected to the centre.
In a tweet on Tuesday, November 17, the APC said the governor has returned home.
Meanwhile, just days after Governor Umahi informed the PDP of his plan to leave for the APC, one of his commissioners resigned.
Ebonyi commissioner for intergovernmental affairs, Lazarus Ogbee, announced his resignation in a letter to the governor.
