- Lionel Messi’s future at Barcelona remains in doubt as he is in final year of his existing contract
- The Argentine star almost left the Catalan club for Manchester City during the summer
- Reports say the Citizens are stepping up their pursuit for the legend in January
Manchester City are intensifying their pursuit of Barcelona captain Lionel Messi after the club failed in their bid to sign the Argentine during the summer when he had a manic period at the Catalan club.
City are preparing to launch a bid for Messi to see him move to the Etihad Stadium during the January transfer window after missing out on the super star earlier.
Messi is said to be in frosty relationship with the Spanish club and his contract expires next summer, but Barcelona are desperate for money.
Last summer, the Argentine captain reportedly agreed to move to the Etihad Stadium in a deal worth €700 million (£623 million) with the City Football Group - the same amount as his release clause.
The embattled Barcelona star was said to have agreed to the financial terms over the course of five years that will see him under employ of the City Football Group.
It stipulates that Messi will play at Premier League club Manchester City for three years and then another two years at Major League Soccer side, New York City F,C also a franchise of the City Football Group.
But the player was forced to make a U-turn to see off his contract at Barcelona after the club cited clauses in his contract.
The Spanish giants have only the January transfer window to make good cash off the player by selling him, otherwise he would leave for free at the end of the season.
And now that they are in financial debt to the tune of £437million, selling Messi would be the best idea and Manchester City are lurking around to make an offer in January.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Luis Suarez has stated categorically that Lionel Messi is much more concerned about his family than football, amid rumours that the Argentine is set to leave Barcelona.
The future of the six-time Ballon d’Or winner at the Catalan club remains in doubt in the wake of the epic transfer saga which almost crippled the club during the summer.
And with rumours linking the Argentine with a move to Premier league club Manchester City, his former team-mate and friend Suarez has stated that Messi is more concerned about his family right now.
