- Governor Akeredolu has said no APC member would threaten the life of his PDP rival in the state's last governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede
- Jegede had earlier raised an alarm that his life was in danger after filing a petition against Akeredolu's victory
- Akeredolu, however, described the alleged threat as an illusion, telling the PDP governorship candidate to face his petition at the tribunal
The governor of Ondo state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has reacted to the allegation of death threat raised by Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last governorship election in the state.
Jegede had recently said his life was being threatened over the petition he filed at the tribunal challenging the victory of Governor Akeredolu.
However, reacting through the spokesman of his campaign organisation, Richard Olatunde, Governor Akeredolu said the alarm raised by Jegede was merely an illusion, The Nation reported.
The Ondo state governor said Jegede was known for using tactics to seek attention even during the electioneering campaign.
He said the allegation of threat to his life was another attempt to stir unpopular discussion around the election that has been concluded by the people of Ondo state.
Nevertheless, Governor Akeredolu urged the security agencies to provide adequate protection for him.
Stating that no one in the All Progressives Congress (APC) would threaten Jegede’s life, Governor Akeredolu advised Jegede to look within his party, the PDP, especially as the party is allegedly embroiled in a leadership crisis.
The statement reads in part:
“Instead of seeking undue attention with unfounded claims and infantile alarms, Jegede should face his petition at the tribunal and allow the cause of law to determine its merit even as this alarm seems preemptive and defeatist in reasoning.
“While recalling the different show of violence by the PDP in the build-up to the last election, we want to say emphatically, that, as a candidate of a political party who marketed violence, Jegede cannot be threatened by anyone. Nevertheless, we urged the security agencies to provide adequate protection for him.
“The APC is a peaceful political party that respects the wishes of the people. At least, we are sure that not anyone from the APC would threaten Jegede’s life, especially with the shallow document called election petition he has deposited at the Tribunal.”
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the ruling APC reacted to Jegde's decision to challenge the Ondo governorship election at the tribunal.
The party said it entertained no fear, adding that its candidate in the election, Governor Akeredolu, was also not worried.
The Ondo state publicity secretary of the party, Alex Kalejaiye said the party is prepared to meet Jegede at the tribunal.
