Following the announcement that a vaccine that is 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 infections is in its phase three trials, the federal government has promised that Nigerians will not be left out immediately it is available to the public.
This was disclosed by the minister for health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, in Abuja on Tuesday, November 10, at a two-day multi-sectoral conference on the COVID-19.
According to him, there are arrangements to ensure that Nigerians get the vaccine immediately it comes out.
The vaccine is jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.
“I must say on the issue of vaccine that Africa will be considered. The Federal Ministry of Health, just last week; we signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure that when the vaccines, wherever they come from, that have been established to be effective for COVID-19, we will not be left behind.”
Meanwhile, a new study has revealed that many COVID-19 survivors are likely to be at greater risk of developing mental illness.
This was predicted by psychiatrists on Monday, November 9, after a large study found 20% of those infected with the coronavirus are diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder within 90 days.
Anxiety, depression, and insomnia were most common among recovered COVID-19 patients in the study who developed mental health problems.
In another related development, Pfizer/BioNTech has revealed the first interim results in large-scale trials of its vaccine which is in its phase 3 trial.
The vaccine is said to be 90% effective and would be sold at different prices between countries and regions when available.
