Murder, corruption: Lagos command tries 81 policemen, dismisses 10

As Nigeria police continue thorough reforms, the force's Lagos command on Wednesday, November 11, disclosed that it has given a marching order to 10 of its top personnel.

Hakeem Odumosu, Lagos police commissioner, made this disclosure in a statement by the state's police public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.

Adejobi further clarified that the officers were dismissed for professional misconduct such as murder, discreditable conduct, excessive use of power, corruption among others.

The command's PPRO also disclosed that 81 officers have been subjected to trials for various criminal and disciplinary offences that were committed between October 2019 and October 2020.

He said this is part of the move to promote discipline and core values of policing in Lagos state, adding that 18 of the command's men were reduced in ranks.

Legit.ng recalls that prior to this decision, not less than 37 police officers who belong to the now-disbanded controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit were dismissed.

This was contained in the report of the special presidential panel set up by the federal government in 2018 on reform of the controversial and dreaded unit.

No fewer than 24 officers of the scrapped unit also faced prosecution over various professional misconducts.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Adamu, inspector general of police, has ordered the withdrawal of the police protection from some top personalities and organisations in the country.

This directive was contained in a letter directed to all zonal assistant inspector-generals and all state commissioners of police through a wireless message dated Wednesday, November 4.
