The minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio has said the sum of N15 billion allocated for the construction of the East-West Road is not too huge for a single project.

Akpabio said:

“I want to deliver a road that will last. You may not like my state, but look at my records. The road I did 13 years ago in my state is still standing. There are no potholes in any of them.
“I have a lot hope that I will deliver same in the Niger Delta. We will provide you with the details of the designs. I have not allowed any single variation because I have not seen the kind of quality of work I would have loved to see. There was one that entered into the Federal Executive Council and I had to step it down."

He explained that the cost of the project was not over-priced, noting that the aggregate has gone up in terms of materials.

But members of the committee disagreed with him, insisting that the N15 billion is too much for one project out of the ministry’s N19 billion total budget for 2021.

The minister explained on Friday, October 1, that the decision was taken for economic and commercial benefits.

According to him, Nigeria needs to take economic advantages of import and export of Niger Republic, Chad and Burkina Faso.
