President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, November 10, in his goodwill message to his nephew, Mamman Daura as he celebrated his 81st birthday, said many Nigerians misunderstand him.
Describing the enviable qualities of Daura, President Buhari said he is a dedicated public servant, consummate administrator, and one of Nigeria's worthiest gentlemen.
The president claimed that it is impossible to have a discussion with this elderly relative of his without gaining from his vast experience, knowledge, and wisdom.
The message released by presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, read:
"President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with Malam Mamman Daura on the occasion of his 81st birthday, describing him as “a dedicated public servant, consummate administrator, and one of our worthiest gentlemen who is widely misunderstood by so many.
"The president said on the occasion that “Mamman Daura is a thoroughbred public administrator with an all-rounded knowledge and experience in life and government."
Meanwhile, there was a report about two months ago that Daura had been flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
A presidencial source whose name was not disclosed confirmed that he travelled for his regular medical check-up, which was delayed because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
The 80-year-old was flown in a private jet to the UK. “It’s not an emergency trip, it was planned long ago, but was delayed by this pandemic, and you know he has been going to the UK to see his doctors,” the source was quoted to have said.
However, the presidency spurned reports claiming Mamman Daura had been flown out of the country for a medical checkup.
An anonymous presidency source was quoted as saying the president's nephew was in sound health. The source reportedly said the elder statesman only travelled to London for a long-scheduled business trip, noting Daura is in good health.
