Amina Mohammed says a woman can lead Nigeria

The United Nations (UN) deputy secretary-general, Amina Mohammed, has spoken about the possibility of a woman succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Mohammed’s comment was made on Tuesday, November 10, when she spoke on a television programme in Abuja, Daily Trust reported.

She said expressed the belief that women can rule Nigeria if they aspire to do so.

The official said:

“That is my hope and I do not see that there isn’t a woman that cannot do that. I always believe that you should strive for that aspiration and don’t fail for want of trying."

The UN official stated that a woman would be able to lead Nigeria if men can be convinced to support a female presidential candidate.

Mohammed said:

“So, women should stand up. They have 50% of the votes and if they can convince the ‘hes’ for ‘shes’, the men who support women, then absolutely why not? There is no reason why a woman cannot lead Nigeria.”

Mohammed had led a delegation of UN senior officials on a visit to Nigeria. She also held a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss the strategies to rebuild Nigerian after the devastations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Garus Gololo has advised former president, Goodluck Jonathan not to join the race for the 2023 presidential election.

Gololo gave the advice in Abuja on Sunday, November 8, in response to reports that some groups from the northern and southern parts of the country are supporting a return of Jonathan to the presidency in 2023.
