President Buhari urges Nigerian youths to be peaceful

- President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that Nigerian youths would do well to keep the peace

- The president said it is in the interest of the youths to be peaceful in all their demands

- The president made the comment when received a high-ranking United Nations official

President Muhammadu Buhari has advised young Nigerians to be peaceful in making their demands from the government.

Buhari made the comment when he received his former minister of environment, Amina Mohammed, who is the current Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Mohammed is leading a delegation of senior UN officials to Nigeria, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Ghana.

Her visits are expected to highlight how the UN is working together with governments and others to recover better from the COVID-19 pandemic.

His words:

“Our own generation is on the last lap, we are exiting. It is in the interest of the youths to keep the peace. They want jobs, infrastructure, and development.
“I have sent a team led by the Chief of Staff (Professor Ibrahim Gambari) to go round the country, talk to traditional rulers, who will then talk to the youths. The views of the youths have been heard.
“We can’t just sit, fold our hands, and do nothing. We are doing our best within the limits of resources.”

President Buhari rued the fact that COVID-19 has shrunk the global economy, noting that it has wrought devastation on lives and livelihoods around the world.

On climate change, he said Nigeria was concerned about the recharge of Lake Chad, which has great implications on security, irregular migration, and livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has restated the loyalty of officers and men of the Nigerian Army to President Buhari’s administration.

Buratai made his stance known while addressing participants at the opening ceremony of a two-day Nigerian Army event in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The COAS was represented by the commander of infantry of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Stevenson Olabanji at the event.
