The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated the US president-elect, Joe Biden on his projected victory over Donald Trump.
The party in a statement on Sunday, November 8, through its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, also commended Americans for a peaceful election.
Ologbondiyan noted that the US election adhered to strict democratic principles despite the intense competition.
He said Nigeria could learn important lessons from the US election where the independence of the electoral body was respected.
Ologbondiyan called for Nigeria to imitate the way the judiciary and the security forces did not interfere in the election.
The party said Nigeria needs to strengthen its institutions and rules instead of strengthening individuals.
The PDP said:
"Moreover, the PDP charges President Muhammadu Buhari to draw lessons from the post-Election remarks of the US President-elect by addressing the divisive tendencies, nepotism and marginalization which characterize his administration as well as other actions and policies that threaten the stability, unity and development of our nation."
The PDP spokesperson called on Biden to use his office to promote world peace and global unity.
Meanwhile, the US incumbent president, Donald Trump is yet to come to terms with the fact that he has lost to Democrat, Joe Biden in the presidential election.
Trump’s wife Melania is said to have since joined the president’s inner circle advising him to accept Biden’s victory and concede defeat.
A source told CNN on Sunday, November 8, that the First Lady, who is yet to publicly comment on the election results, advised her husband that the time had come for him to accept defeat.
