Jones joined John F. Kennedy High School and later graduated from Ramapo College. While in college, he studied Jazz, but he later changed his major to Theatre. This decision came about after he played the lead role in the production of Cinderella Ever After during his sophomore year.
Career
After his graduation in 1978, William This Is Us actor moved to Los Angeles, California. While in LA, he drove a bus from the Southern California Rapid Transit District for four years.
After leaving this job, he travelled to different places such as Arizona, San Francisco, and New Orleans before going back to New York City in 1985.
In New York City, he spent a majority of his time at the Nuyoprican Poets Cafe in Manhattan's East Village. He became part of a play which was based on the Billie Holiday jam known as Don't Explain. He was so excellent that he caught the attention of the director, who offered him a role.
In 1994, This Is Us William played the lead role in the Cheryl West play known as Holiday Heart. He also took part in numerous theatrical productions, mostly with a company known as Steppenwolf Theater Company based in Chicago, Illinois.
