Enugu auto crash: Buhari mourns death of pupils

The disturbing news of the death of 21 persons including school children in Enugu on Wednesday, October 28, has saddened President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari in his condolence message commiserated with the Catholic Church of Awgu, which runs Presentation Nursery and Primary School that the late pupils attended as well as the state government, Vanguard reports.

He prayed for divine succour for the bereft families and called on God to avert any of such tragedy in Nigeria.

Moreover, he advised motorists to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy before bringing them to expressways.

Earlier, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Thursday, October 29, confirmed the death of at least 21 persons who were involved in a ghastly auto crash along the old Enugu-Okigwe road.

FRSC sector commander in Enugu state, Ogbonnaya Kalu, who spoke with journalists revealed that the tragedy involved a vehicle and a 608 Mercedes Benz bus conveying school children and their teachers back home from school.

Kalu further disclosed that the school bus had 64 occupants, which included 61 students, at least two teachers and a driver.

He told newsmen that the accident occurred at the Nkwo junction on Wednesday, October 28, adding that FRSC operatives have visited the scene as well as the hospitals where those who survived were getting medical help.

His words:

“The low-bed trailer, which eyewitnesses alleged suffered a brake failure, rammed into the school bus first and into a welder’s shop, where the welder and his apprentice were working."
