EndSARS: UK govt assisted operatives with 4-year training, says British MP

- SARS, before it was recently disbanded, got supplies of equipment from the UK government

- The foreign government also trained operatives of the defunct squad for at least four years

Facts are beginning to emerge as to the international funding the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) got to function by standard practices.

A member of the United Kingdom (UK)'s parliament, Kate Osamor, on Thursday, October 29, revealed that the British government provided operatives of the disbanded police unit with proper training for four years (2016- 2020).

Osamor also disclosed on her verified Twitter handle that the squad got funding from the UK within this period by way of supply of equipment.

She made this statement of fact in reaction to a claim by the minister for Africa, James Duddridge, that the government had offered no such help to the unit.

Osamor tweeted:

"On 19 October the Minister for Africa @JamesDuddridge assured me that the UK Government had provided no funding to SARS units.
"That wasn't true. The Minister has now confirmed that the government has trained and supplied equipment to SARS units from 2016 to 2020."

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had announced the disbandment of SARS, a unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

The IGP's disbandment of the special squad was contained in a statement made available by police spokesperson, DCP Frank Mba, on Sunday, October 11.

According to the statement, all SARS officers were redeployed with immediate effect.

Also, to avoid a reoccurrence of police brutality and other ugly incidents that led to the dissolution SARS, the IGP said a forum was being formed to regularly interface with the police leadership at all levels and advise on police activities as they affect the general public.

The police boss added that a new policing arrangement to address anticipated policing gaps the dissolution of SARS would cause had been evolved and shall be announced in due course.
