The Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development, (CNEEPD) has expressed their gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for adopting a civil approach in handling the violence that erupted as a result of the #EndSARS protests.
The group, made up of northern elders, said Buhari's directive to security forces was why violent protesters were handled professionally in spite of the massive looting and destruction of public and private properties, The Nation reports.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Engr Zana Goni and Hajiya Mario Bichi, the national coordinator, and national women leader respectively.
According to the northern elders, the reason normalcy is returning within a short period following the violence that trailed the #EndSARS protests was due to the president’s wisdom in dousing the tension.
Speaking further, the group commended northern youths for exercising restraint despite the high level of provocative comments and videos on social media during the violent protests.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo lauded President Buhari after his national address on the EndSARS protest.
The former head of state was one of the living Nigerian leaders invited by the president for a virtual meeting on Friday, October 23.
Speaking during the meeting, Obasanjo commended President Buhari for recognising that peaceful protest is part of Nigerian democracy.
In a related development, President Buhari asked his ministers to relocate to their home states following the violence and looting orchestrated by the EndSARS protests across Nigeria.
The Nation reports that the president's action was to douse the tension caused by the demonstrations over the activities of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
