University of Ibadan set to name new VC

- The 72-year-old University of Ibadan is set to elect a new vice-chancellor who will run the affairs of the institution for the next five years

- The UI council chairman, Nde Joshua Waklek, is leading the 5-man panel that will appoint the new VC

- The panel is currently meeting on the campus where the finalists are being interviewed

The University of Ibadan is set to unveil the next vice-chancellor of the institution as the tenure of Professor Idowu Olayinka ends on November 30.

Legit.ng's regional reporter in Ibadan, Ridwan Kolawole, reports that out of 17 candidates contesting for the highest position in the university, six of them made it to the final stage.

The finalists included Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Prof. Olusegun Ademowo, Prof. Olatunde Farombi, Prof. Abideen Aderinto, Prof. Babatunde Salako, and Prof. Femi Mimiko.

It was gathered that a community forum had been held where the aspirants from various universities from north and south of the country presented their action plans for the 72-year-old institution.

All the finalists are from the University of Ibadan except Prof. Mimiko who is from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The chairman of the council is heading the 5-man panel to unveil the new vice-chancellor amid protest by the non-academic staff union in the university.

According to the report, the protesting unions have locked the gates that lead to the university holding many to ransom.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) were named among the best 2000 universities in the world.

It was reported that the two universities which presently hold national rankings of first and second in Nigeria could not make the top 1,000.
