David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state, has pitched his tents with those who believe the next president should come from the southeast region.
The conversation on who takes the baton of leadership from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 has been gaining momentum with groups, coalitions and individuals establishing arguments on where the presidency should be zoned to.
Speaking during a broadcast on Monday, October 26, Umahi, who is the chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum (SGF), posited that for the sake of fairness and justice, and more importantly to protect the national harmony, the next president should come from the southeast.
The governor further maintained that this is the spirit and the voice of the youths from the region.
Umahi also commended the leadership of the EndSARS protest for burying the hatchets and putting an end to their demonstration in the southeast region.
He condemned the shooting at Lekki and suggested that the southeast governors would continue to call for "accelerated investigation so that the culprits will be brought to book."
The governor promised to take the demand of the protesters to the president and ensure that everything is restored back to the peace lane.
"I think the South-East should be allowed to produce the leader of the country. I’m sure their (youths) spirit is there.
“We had a very useful discussion with the youths. They requested that we have a discussion with the President over their demands."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that as the conversation on who takes the mantle of leadership from President Buhari in 2023 gets more momentum, an Igbo group has shortlisted ten people who can wrestle for 2023 southeast presidency.
The group, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), made its resolution known after its national executive council meeting in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
Among those suggested as credible candidates are Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state, renowned economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former governor of Anambra state and current Senate chief whip, Orji Uzor Kalu.
