- Petr Cech was included in Chelsea’s 25-man squad for emergency purposes
- The 38-year-old was handed the role of Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor after retiring in 2019
- Video of his first training session since ditching the suit and tie for gloves once again impressed fans
Footage of Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech in training at age 38 recently went viral on social media for all the right reasons.
The 38-year-old was named in Frank Lampard’s 25-man squad as an emergency goalkeeper, despite retiring in 2018.
Having left Arsenal in 2019 after five years with the North Londoners, Cech was appointed technical and performance adviser at Chelsea.
He somehow managed to keep himself fit despite his advanced age. Having been called up for football action again, a video which has been circulating online revealed the veteran shot stopper still had the skills in him.
In the video clip, Cech flaunted his agility and mobility between the sticks.
It was quite easy to believe Cech was never retired as he thrust himself in front of goal like a young player ready for action once again.
Fans and pundits alike have analysed the Cech selection as one which could potentially seal the fate of under fire Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Kepa’s form in a Blues’ shirt has dipped spectacularly to the point Lampard brought in Edouard Mendy from Rennes to solve the team’s problems in front of goal.
Although Cech was named in the squad, Lampard insists the move was purely for ‘emergency purposes’.
It was part of Chelsea’s measures to ensure they were well prepared in the event one of their players, especially in goalkeeping positions, was hit by the dreaded COVID-19.
"Petr has been training with the keepers for a little while. He's very fit and still relatively young. We had a space in the squad and this year is like no other because of Covid and what it might do to selection and isolation. So it was an easy one,” Lampard explained.

Chelsea face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 24, before making the trip to Russia to face Krasnodar in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Kepa Arrizabalaga could be sent on loan to La Liga side Sevilla during the January transfer window, reports claim.
The signing of Edouard Mendy has thrown the Spanish goalkeeper's future at Stamford Bridge in doubt and could be heading back home in January.
Kepa was in goal for Chelsea during their 3-3 draw with Southampton and the goalkeeper was questionable for the goals after the Blues threw away a two-goal cushion.
