- A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Anambra beginning from Thursday, October 22
- This was announced by Governor Willie Obiano in a live broadcast
- Obiano noted that the decision is necessary to avoid complete anarchy following widespread violence in the state
Just like many Nigerian governors who have taken measures to prevent the total breakdown of law and order in their states, Governor Willie Obiano has declared a 24-hour curfew in Anambra which is expected to take effect immediately.
Governor Obiano on Thursday, October 22, said that he was forced to make this necessary move in a bid to avoid the descent into anarchy following the state-wide violence that has come as an offshoot of the EndSARS protests.
He, therefore, ordered that all schools and businesses in the state be closed and that gatherings of all sorts are banned from 8pm.
The governor also warned personnel of security agents not to use violence or force on residents anywhere in Anambra as they enforce compliance to the curfew.
"...we are taking precautionary steps to prevent further descent to lawlessness in Anambra State by imposing a 24-hour curfew with effect from 8pm today until we bring this rising tension under control.
“Therefore, all schools and markets in Anambra State are hereby closed. All gatherings by groups and associations under any name or label from 8pm are banned. The law enforcement agencies in the state have been duly directed to enforce compliance.
“However, all law enforcement officers charged with ensuring compliance to the restriction on movement must resist the temptation of applying excessive force while attempting to bring the situation under control.”
According to him, the state cannot afford to repeat the same mistake that created the problem in the first place.
Meanwhile, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers imposed a 24-hour curfew in some areas of the state.
This was contained in a statement signed and released by Governor Wike's media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, on Tuesday, October 21.
Legit.ng gathered that Governor Wike in a statewide broadcast also announced that the curfew would take place in the entire Oyigbo local government area of the state.
