Following increased violence by persons with ill motives who have taken over the EndSARS protest in Ibadan, Oyo state government has deployed a special security unit to contain the situation.
Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday, October 20, announced that the state has deployed officers of Operation Burst to various spots in the capital to ensure the security of the protesters.
According to the governor, while the team will continue to protect genuine protesters and their right to protest, the state cannot allow persons with ulterior motives to hijack the rallies.
"We are deploying members of Operation Burst to various hotspots in Ibadan to arrest the situation and restore normalcy.
"The members of the team will continue to protect genuine protesters and their right to protest. But we cannot allow persons with ulterior motives to hijack the protests."
Governor Makinde noted that peaceful protest is an important aspect of democracy in Nigeria and as such, no one should be harassed for engaging in such, hence the deployment of the unit.
He noted that none of the protesters have been caught perpetrating any force of violence if not for thugs who have taken over the process in the last two days in the state.
Apart from announcing that all schools in the state have been closed in the interim, the governor noted that the arrest of the hoodlums in the first step in the move to get justice for all victims of their evil acts.
