Prisons spokesman says number of inmates who escaped unknown

The number of prisoners who escaped from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Benin is still unknown, the service has declared.

Recall that criminals recently infiltrated the EndSARS movement to invade prisons in Benin and Oko in Edo state.

According to Austin Njoku, spokesperson of the service, investigation is ongoing to determine the exact number of prisoners who escaped, The Cable reports.

Going further, he said that the figure of casualties has also not been confirmed.

He said:

“Custodial centres were attacked this morning by suspected protesters under the #EndSARS protests in Benin and Oko in Benin.

“Efforts are underway to arrest the situation and return normalcy back to the centres. The armed squad personnel of the service are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.”

He also condemned the attackers for “their non-peaceful, and violent destructive actions”.

In a related development, the minister of youth and sports development, Sunday Dare, urged the EndSARS protesters across the country to end their daily demonstrations and enter into dialogue with the government on law enforcement reforms.

The minister said the government had met the demonstrators’ demands, including the creation of an independent body to investigate alleged misconduct and the release of all arrested protesters.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that hours after some hoodlums broke into two prisons in Oko and Benin, NCS confirmed the ugly incident.

In a statement by the spokesperson, investigations have begun to search for the escaped inmates.

The service condemned the protesters for their non-peaceful, and violent destructive actions, adding that the exact figures of escapees and casualties were yet to be confirmed and would be communicated after preliminary investigations.
