A swimming prodigy from Martinique, Christophe Maleau, has successfully swum from Saint Lucia to his native country.
The challenge, which has been attempted by just a few people who were older than Christophe, took the young boy 13 hours, 50 minutes and 47 seconds to complete.
In 2017, Christophe completed a 6.4 km swim, and also successfully swam between the Martiniquan towns, Diamant and Schoelcher, in the space of 10 hours in 2018.
During the recent challenge, the boy's father followed him in a canoe while doctors, divers and other family members were in another boat, Face2Face Africa reports.
Christophe, who dreams of swimming at the Olympics, said what kept him going during the challenge was the songs he sang to himself and the thought of the encouragement he received on social media.
In his words:
“I held on singing songs to myself, thinking about the encouragement I received on social media."
He admitted that he was hungry at times and wanted to stop because he was tired but he told himself that he had to keep swimming.
