Governor Okowa speaks on #EndSARS protests, hails Nigerian youths

- Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa is of the opinion that Nigerian youths have made their voice stronger with the #EndSARS protests

- The governor commended the youths in the country for speaking with one voice and forcing changes in the scheme of things

- According to him, the youths and not only fighting for their rights, but also pushing for reforms in the Nigeria Police Force

Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on Wednesday, October 14, said with the outcome of the #EndSARS protests across Nigeria, leaders in the country will likely see things differently.

Okowa stated this when the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) of Delta origin and the National Executive of National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU) visited him at Government House, Asaba.

He commended youths who came out to protest over issues of police brutality and harassment, saying it will challenge leaders to focus more on issues that affect young people.

His words:

“The youths of this nation have been so quiet for so long, but suddenly they have come out with a voice that will shape up the leadership of the country.
“With the outcome of the protests, leaders are more likely to see things differently and I am glad to announce that actions are being taken on three out of the five-point demand by the protesters.”

The governor also corrected the impression that his government is involved in the day-to-day decisions taken by higher institutions in the state.

Recall that Governor Okowa had on Tuesday, October 13 said the ongoing nationwide protests for an end to police brutality in the country was a reflection of leadership and family failures over the years.

The governor stated this while addressing protesters who stormed Government House, Asaba after joining their counterparts nationwide for the EndSARS protest.

He told the protesters that as youths of the nation, they had every right to organise themselves to protest against societal ills.

On his part, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom called for youths to be carried along in the new initiative to commence community policing nationwide.

According to him, with their innate knowledge of the state, the communities and the people, the involvement of community youth will guarantee greater peace and security.
