- Carles Puyol says Lionel Messi will not leave Barcelona for any club next summer
- The six-time Ballon d'Or winner tried dumping them this summer but later changed his mind
- The 33-year-old's current deal expires next year and Man City have shown immense interest in him
Barcelona legend Carles Puyol is confident Lionel Messi will not leave the club when his contract expires next summer.
The 33-year-old was close to walking away from the Catalans this summer but the avoidance of legal battles with the club made him change his mind.
With the Argentine's current deal set to expire in 2021, the Blaugrana's ex-captain believes his former teammate will remain at the Nou Camp beyond this campaign.
Messi has pushed his issues with Barca behind to give them his best for the 2020-21 season despite Manchester city's huge interest in him.
According to Sport Bible, the 42-year-old was among those who gave the six-time Ballon d'Or winner moral support during his attempt to dump the club. Puyol said on Twitter on August 25, 2020:
"Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend.
The Spaniard insists that Messi is not just an asset to the Spanish League, he is also one of the best in the world. Puyol told reporters:
"Like any fan, I did not want Messi to leave, but this is football. In the end, he decided to stay. He recently said that he is motivated, that he wants to win and we hope he can continue with us for many years. He is a huge asset for La Liga, he is one of the best in the world."
Meanwhile, Manchester City chief Omar Berrada claims Premier League club would attempt to bid for the forward next year, he told the Manchester Evening News.
"He's an amazing talent, he's somebody that can make a significant impact at any club in the world on and off the pitch immediately.
"He's the best player in the world, he's the best player of his generation. I think any club in the world would like to explore the possibility of him joining their team.
Messi has scored just once and assisted two other goals in three Spanish League meetings so far this campaign.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Sergio Aguero has jokingly tagged his relationship status with his long time pal Lionel Messi as 'old married couples' when they are being paired together while on international duty, Goal.
The Manchester City forward and Messi broke into the senior national team together since 2006 and have won U20 and Olympic tournaments with different setups.
They have also featured in three World Cups, four Copas America but failed to win any of these tournaments together.
