President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, October 12, reacted to continued protests across the country over police brutality, reform of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and abolishment of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The Nigerian leader in his first public statement since the EndSARS protest erupted across the country four days ago said that the disbanding of SARS is only the first step in his administration's effort to the commitment of extensive police reforms.

Buhari in an address shared on his Twitter page further spoke on the agitations of Nigerians regarding excessive use of force, extrajudicial killings, and wrongful conduct by men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

He said:

“The disbanding of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reforms in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives and livelihood of our people.”

The Nigerian president also assured the people that officers responsible for the misconduct or wrongful acts will be brought to justice.

EndSARS: Justice will be done - IGP assures Nigerians

Buhari's public address is coming a day after the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced the disbandment of SARS.

The announcement of the dissolution of the police unit came after days of #EndSARS online and offline protests by Nigerians against the brutality and extra-judicial killings by SARS operatives nationwide.

The IGP's disbandment of the special squad was contained in a statement made available by police spokesperson, DCP Frank Mba, on Sunday, October 11.
