Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, a former minister of finance in Nigeria, is said to be having a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Iweala was accompanied by the minister of industry, trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo, and Zubair Dada, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Although not officially confirmed, Iweala's visit to the president may not be entirely unconnected to her bid to become the director-general of the World Trade Organisation.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the federal government had appealed to the members of the global body to elect the Nigerian-born economist.

Katagum, who is also the chairperson of the Okonjo-Iweala campaign team, described the former minister as “the best choice for the job.”

The minister commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU) for backing the Nigerian candidate.

Katagun said:

“These are excellent testimonies of her eminent qualification for the top job. The WTO as of today needs a DG with multiple skills to revive the challenged spirit of trade liberalisation worldwide. The WTO faces a lot of problems currently, and confronting these challenges necessarily requires building trust among the membership especially as the problems are not solely of a technical nature.
“Only a DG with the requisite political and negotiating skills coupled with multilateral experience can ensure deep engagement of the Members in order to restore trust and build a truly efficient organisation."
