It was indeed a moment of history as the police inspector-general, Mohammed Adamu, announced SARS dissolution — obviously giving a clear validation to the struggle by Nigerians against continuous police brutality.
It would be recalled that since Thursday, October 8, people have been taken to the streets to protest ceaseless police maiming, killing and grand extortion of the people profiled as criminal based on their look by SARS operatives.
Social media has also been awash with #EndSars hashtag peaking globally as Nigerians across ages, tribes and classes continue to demonstrate their displeasure against pronounced police brutality nationwide.
The disbandment, though overdue, has been welcomed as Nigeria now take to the microblogging platform Twitter to celebrate the historical feat.
Legit.ng highlight some of the best reactions so far:
A social media user wrote: When “they” say SARS has been ‘dissolved’ - what does this really mean? That the name has been changed to a new one with the same officers? That the officers are now reassigned to other units in the NPF? The entire Nigeria Police is a menace to society."
Another Twitter user wrote: "The name SARS has only been removed, another name would still come up. We need Justice, we want them gone from the Police force. We have won the battle but not the war.”
A Twitter user said" Congratulations Nigerians. Y’all did it. This is just the beginning tho. But yes we can go all the way. Now we can help the police get enough funding from the few thieves holding it at the top. So they can police us right."
Popular comedian Mr Marcaroni tweeted: "Nigerian Youths!! we have a voice!! We must use it to the fullest!! Our demands need to be clear!! We need to be sure that all our demands are being met!! Yes #EndSARS!! But we need more accountability!! We need Justice!! We need peace of mind!!!
Another social media user ShugabanR said: "SARS finally dissolved amid massive #EndPoliceBrutality protests. But it's not yet Uhuru. In his address today IGP Adamu said officers under the controversial unit will be redeployed to other formations. Changing a mad man's cloth doesn't make him sane. Congratulations Nigerians."
