Ahead of the Ondo state governorship election, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, has warned politicians against actions and utterances that could undermine a free, fair and credible poll.
A statement signed by police spokesperson, DCP Frank Mba, indicates that the IGP warned that anyone caught engaging in any electoral fraud such as political violence, vote-buying, ballot box snatching, etc. will be punished according to the law.
Similarly, the IGP has charged all police officers and other law enforcement agents deployed for the election to act in accordance with the Electoral Act and other extant laws.
He warned that any police officer found acting contrary to their oaths of office or in aid of illicit electoral practices will be strictly and personally held liable with dire legal consequences.
The police boss also reassured the people of Ondo state that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure their safety throughout the period of the gubernatorial election and beyond.
He also enjoined all eligible voters to come out en mass to freely and peacefully exercise their franchise in line with their civic obligation, without any fear of intimidation on the day of the election.
Similarly, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, has called on political parties who have candidates contesting in the Ondo gubernatorial election to uphold peace during the poll.
Abubakar made this call during the signing of the peace accord by the candidates, an event convened by the National Peace Committee (NPC).
The Sokoto monarch stated that if service is the goal of the politicians, then the coming election should not be a do or die affair.
