- Sergino Dest made his debut for Barcelona in their stalemate vs Sevilla
- The 19-year-old replaced Jordi Alba who appeared to have suffered a knock in the 75th minute
- Dest confessed he didn't know what Messi said to him but they both laughed afterwards
Sergino Dest made his debut for Barcelona in their 1-1 draw against Europa League reigning champions Sevilla at the Nou Camp last weekend.
Luuk de Jong and Philippe Coutinho both scored the goals that helped their respective clubs share the spoils in the early minutes of the first half.
The 19-year-old was introduced into the game in the 75th minute after coming on for injured Jordi Alba, and he immediately made an impact.
Dest created a chance for Lionel Messi in the 81st minute but the Argentine failed to convert the opportunity and give his side the winner.
The defender joined the Catalans on a five-year deal valued around £23.5million deal to become the first United States international to play for the La Liga club.
He revealed his excitement at meeting the five-time Ballon d'Or winner but he told NOS that he wasn't sure what the 33-year-old said.
"The Argentine doesn’t speak English, but it was very special to meet him. If I'm honest, I don't know what he told me, but we were both smiling, so everything must be fine, right?"
Bayern Munich also made attempts to sign the defender but chose to join Barca - the same club his hero Ronaldinho played for. And Dest continued:
"I also chose Barcelona over any other team because it has always been a dream of mine to play here.
"My favourite player, my idol growing up was Ronaldinho and he made his own history in Barcelona. When I found out about the interest from Barca it was an easy decision to make.'"
Dest joined Ajax in 2012 but was only promoted to the senior team last summer and made 35 appearances across competitions for the Dutch team.
The defender is the fifth United States star to play in the Spanish League after the likes of Jozy Altidore, Kasey Keller, Oguchi Onyewu and Shaq Moore.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Ousmane Dembele could complete a deadline day move to Manchester United from Barcelona this window.
The 23-year-old Frenchman appears to have agreed to personal terms with the Red Devils having fallen down the pecking order at the Nou Camp.
He has made just one appearance under Ronald Koeman so far this campaign after coming on as a substitute for Ansu Fati in the 70th minute.
