Governor Godwin Obaseki may soon be facing a tough legal battle as seven governorship candidates who participated in the Edo governorship election disclosed that they are considering legal action against the winner of the poll.
Legit.ng recalls that Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner of the Edo election which was largely considered free and fair, but other contestants are now thinking of challenging his victory, The Sun reported.
The politicians on the platform of Edo 2020 governorship candidates’ forum made their intentions known at a press briefing on Tuesday, October 6.
A spokesperson for the group, Bishop Akhalamhe said the election was near perfect but noted that there was still room for improvement.
According to Business Day, the candidates said they may file a collective legal action challenging Obaseki’s victory.
The spokesperson for the group said:
“We are positive that, the election was near perfection, though some of the candidates are making arrangements to file their cases in the tribunal resulting from some abserved abnormalities.
“In the conduct of the election, and the forum supports them in order to deepen our democracy. Filing a collective suit is also in consideration by this forum, and we may file our suit soonest.”
The candidates commended the Oba of Benin, Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the roles they played in ensuring the election was peaceful.
In another news, Lucky Iboi, the candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), has challenged the election victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state.
In a petition filed before the electoral tribunal on Monday, October 5, the ADP candidate said he was challenging the eligibility of the governor to contest the election.
The ADP called for the total annulment of the guber poll held on Saturday, September 19.
