Chris Smalling has completed an £18million move from Manchester United to Serie A side Roma this summer.

The England international signed a three-year deal with the option of adding another year after an impressive loan spell at the Stadio Olympico last season.

Smalling told Roma's club website:

"Nothing in life worth having comes easy.
"My head and my heart has always been in Rome. I am delighted to now be yours. Daje Roma!"

Smalling has not been included in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans since the beginning of the new Premier League season.

But after the 30-year-old's successful transfer to Rome, United released an official statement saying:

"Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Chris for his years of service, dedication and professionalism, and wish him all the best for his future."

Smalling has been a subject of speculation during the transfer window as Inter Milan and Newcastle were interested in signing the centre-back.

Roma and United have disagreed multiple times in regard to the English club's asking price of £20m for the defender.

Smalling returned to Old Trafford despite scoring three goals in 37 appearances for Roma last campaign but an agreement was finally reached after their Europa League exit in the last 16 stages.

But the Italian club are happy that they have finally landed their man as chief executive Guido Fienga said:

"We are pleased to be able to welcome Chris back to the club, as one of the pillars of our squad.
