Fatai Owoseni, a former commissioner of police in Lagos state, reacted to calls made by Nigerians for the disbandment of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) while faulting the recent ban of the special operatives.

The special adviser to Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, on security, made the disclosure while speaking on Channels Television breakfast show, Sunrise Daily.

Owoseni, speaking during the interview, explained that the recent move was not the best way to go. He called for an audit of the organisation’s internal mechanism.

He said:

“It is not the best way to go; it is actually not the way to go. I think what the police leadership should do is to properly audit the internal oversight mechanism that is in place.”

The ex-police commissioner went on to accuse SARS operatives of failing to abide by the rules and regulations that govern them in the discharge of their duties.

Owoseni called for measures to be put in place to ensure that SARS operatives avoid abuse of office.

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) M.A Adamu, in response to calls and agitation from Nigerians, banned personnel of FSARS from carrying out routine protocols.

This new directive from the IGP also affects operatives of other tactical squads of the police such as the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), and the Anti-Cultism Squad.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo commended the decision of the inspector general of police.
