Lagos police arrest 2 FSARS operatives as Nigerians call for abolishment of SARS

- The Lagos Police Command has arrested two Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) operatives

- According to the police, the operatives were nabbed with their civilian accomplice for acts of professional misconduct

- The arrest is following renewed calls for the abolishing of police operatives who work in the anti-robbery squad

Following the call for the end of Nigeria Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the Lagos state police command has arrested two operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS).

This was disclosed in a series of tweets on Sunday, October 4, via the official Twitter handle of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The FSARS operatives identified as Inspectors Sale James and Monday Uchiola were apprehended along with their civilian accomplice, Okechukwu Ogbonna.

The men were arrested for acts of professional misconduct including extortion and intimidation of innocent citizens.

The vehicle used for their operations in Lagos state has also been impounded and disciplinary procedure has already commenced against the defaulters.

This development is coming at the same time Inspector-General of Police (IGP) M.A Adamu banned personnel of the FSARS from carrying out routine protocols in response to call and agitation from Nigerians.

This new directive from the IGP also affects operatives of other tactical squads of the police such as the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Anti-Cultism Squad.

The operatives, according to the order are to desist from carrying out routine patrols and other conventional low-risk duties - stop and search duties, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks, traffic checks.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Nigerians descended massively on SARS after some operatives were accused of shooting dead a young man in front of a hotel in the Ughelli area of Delta state.

On the evening of Saturday, October 3, a video surfaced online showing some young men chasing a police van and white Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle. According to the men in the video, the officers shot an unnamed young man and escaped with his SUV.
