The chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has said the Nigerian army has kept the country united by discharging its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
The Cable reported that Buratai made the statement when he spoke to NAN on the commemoration of Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary.
The army chief said the military has ensured that Nigeria remained indivisible by participating in various conflicts within and outside the country.
“If you look at our constitutional role and of course vis-a-vis our defence priority, the defence of Nigeria from external aggression is number one priority and to maintain her territorial integrity is second."
Buratai stated that the military has successfully handled several crises in the country, including the Boko Haram insurgency.
He said officers deserve commendation for working tirelessly to keep Nigeria safe. He pointed out that the work by men of the military has also contributed to the economic, political, and socio-economic development of the country.
The army chief said with more support from the public, the current security challenges the country will be a thing of the past.
In another news, the Citizens Against Insurgency (CAI) on Thursday, October 1, condemned the call by the governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum, to extend an invitation to Chadian troops to help fight Boko Haram terrorists.
CAI said the call by the Borno state governor on the insurgent attacks in the northeast region of Nigeria is "ill-conceived."
In a press statement released by CAI, no governor who also functions as a chief security officer of any state across the country should make such recommendation.
