Police say arrested protesters will face trial for unlawful assembly

Some protesters who were arrested in Lagos on Thursday, October 1, for organising demonstrations would be charged to court, the police have said.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Lagos police command disclosed that 30 protesters would be charged on Friday, October 2, for unlawful assembly, Premium Times reported.

The police accused the protesters of engaging in conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

Security officials also alleged that the group violated the COVID-19 protocols in the state.

The protesters who belonged to the Coalition for Revolution (CORE) were arrested in the Maryland area of Lagos State by police officers.

The Lagos police command had earlier issued a warning against gatherings under the guise of rallies or protests on independence day.

Meanwhile, a march by protesters in the southwest state of Osun has been disrupted by security agencies comprising the Department of State Services (DSS) and police officers.

The Nation reported that the protesters who had converged in Nelson Mandela Park, Old Garage in Osogbo, the state capital, were sent parking by the security officials.

The protest march was reportedly organised by Coalition for Revolution in Osogbo.

In a related report, a police inspector identified as Innocent Adadu has been arrested by the authorities in Lagos State for assaulting a photojournalist, Kayode Jaiyeola while covering a protest in Maryland axis on Thursday, October 1.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman for the state police command confirmed this in a statement issued.

Jaiyeola who works with a newspaper publication was said to have been injured after Adadu attached to Police Mobile Force (PMF) 22 Ikeja hit the journalist with a stick.
