As Nigeria celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, the Independence parade is underway at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived at the venue for the parade and inspection of the guard of honour.

The parade is one of the major events lined up for the 60th independence anniversary celebration. This year's celebrations will be low-key, according to the federal government.

October 1 is a special day in the history of Nigeria. It is the day the country gained independence from colonial rule.

The anniversary parade is being covered by major television and radio stations in Nigeria.

Though Nigerians have been barred from attending the event due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic, diplomats and dignitaries are already at the venue.

The federal government had earlier ordered that all routes leading to the Eagle Square should be blocked from midnight on Wednesday, September 30.

President Buhari kickstarted the Independence Day celebration with the presidential broadcast addressing the citizens at 7am. You can read the full speech here.

Six decades after gaining freedom from Great Britain, Nigeria still stands as one despite years of widespread poverty, tribal wars, massive corruption, and security challenges.

The nation is still united against all odds and the prophecy of doom.

While a celebration is going on at Eagle Square, many Nigerians are lamenting over the poor situation of things in the country.
