Subsidy removal: FG to disburse 2,000 buses to Nigerians

As part of efforts to eradicate poverty in the country and cushion the effects of subsidy removal, the Nigerian government has set up modalities for the disbursement of 2,000 buses.

According to Daily Trust, Dr. George Akume, the minister of special duties and inter-governmental affairs, who revealed this on Monday, September 28, the buses would be disbursed through cooperative societies of Nigeria.

Akume speaking at the inter-ministerial stakeholders meeting on poverty alleviation in Abuja noted that the initiative was part of the programmes to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

He went on to note that his ministry in collaboration with the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development; and other government agencies are executing the initiative.

He said:

“The alleviation of poverty in Nigeria has been and always remains a cardinal agenda of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari."

He said that the need to tackle and eradicate poverty has become even more imperative especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating effect on the world economy.

The minister said that the difficulties encountered by the recent deregulation of the downstream sector which was aimed at putting the economy on sound footing, also underscore the need for such initiative.

It would be recalled that Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, said the federal government plans to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

The president stated that the efficient management of resources and the transformation of the agricultural sector to ensure food security are crucial to poverty eradication.
