Nobody is safe due to Boko Haram, North-East elders cry to Buhari

- Calls have been again on the need to sack the service chiefs following another attack on Governor Babagana Zulum

- This time the call was made by the Coalition for North East Elders for Peace and Development

- The group advised President Muhammadu Buhari to rejig the country's security architecture

Following the recent attack on the convoy of Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, a group of North-East elders under the aegis of Coalition for North East Elders for Peace and Development (CNEEPD), has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to rejig the country's security architecture.

Chairman of the group, Engineer Zana Goni and secretary, Dr Muhammed Misua, in a statement sent to journalists on Saturday, September 26, said the military has come to what they called “breaking point.”

According to the group;

“The military needs reactivation for better and more positive results in line with President Buhari’s vision of leaving Nigeria better than his administration met it.

“We are worried at the ceaseless and relentless attacks on troops and civilian population resulting in heavy casualties in the northeast despite repeated assurances from the service chiefs that the region has not only been cleared of insurgents and terrorists but also made safe.

“We had chosen to remain silent in the past even when there were compelling needs to speak out because of our conviction that the insecurity especially in the northeast would get better.

“But events in recent weeks coupled with the brutal killings of some troops including a commander have forced us to open our lips once again.”

The group noted that there might be low morale among the military personnel on the front-lines occasioned by fighting equipment and the long-overdue retirement of those heading various branches of the armed forces.

The group added:

“We strongly believe that the security heads are now bereft of ideas and need to go so that the younger and experienced officers can come on board with fresh ideas.

“We believe at this point that the military which is at the forefront of prosecuting the war against the adversaries in the two regions of the country has come to a breaking point.”

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Governor Zulum's convoy was shot at by gunmen on his way to visit Internally Displaced Persons with relief materials near the town of Baga in Borno.

Zulum escaped death after his convoy was ambushed on Friday, September 25, by Jihadist insurgents loyal to the IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group.
