The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed readiness to conduct a smooth gubernatorial election in Ondo just like it did in Edo state.
This promise was made by Mahmood Yakubu, INEC's national chairman during his three-day visit to Akure, Ondo state capital to assess the preparedness of the commission's staff members ahead of the poll, Vanguard reports.
Yakubu made it clear that despite the fire outbreak that destroyed a lot of INEC smart card readers in the state recently, the commission is fully ready to conduct a successful election.
“We have already recovered. Unfortunately, we lost 5,000 smart card readers, but we recovered by getting the prerequisite number of card readers from the neighbouring Oyo State, and they have been delivered.
“They have arrived, been charged and configured and are ready for the election on Oct.10, in Ondo State. Importantly, we will use the Z-pads to upload results on election day real-time and we have moved those Z-pads from Edo to Ondo state for the election."
The INEC boss added that the commission will adopt the same topnotch experience and readiness used in Edo for Ondo.
“So, the same preparations that we made for Edo, we have also made for Ondo, so we are prepared for the election.”
Legit.ng had reported about the fire outbreak at the INEC office. The fire broke out on the evening of Thursday, September 10, at its Ondo state head office in Akure.
A statement by the agency indicated that the inferno, which gutted the container housing Smart Card Readers, started around 8pm, adding that men of the Fire Service were containing the fire.
