Independence day: Religious group begins prayers for Nigeria, Buhari

- A group of clerics have commenced a prayer and fasting session for Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari

- The cleric under the aegis of National Inter-Faith and Religious Organization for Peace said the session is in celebration of Nigeria's 60th independence anniversary

An religious group has commenced a prayer and fasting session for Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the nations 60th independent anniversary.

Members of the National Inter-Faith and Religious Organization for Peace (NIFROP) who convened at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to pray for the president described October 1st as a "day of covenant"

The group members, all clerics also said the prayer and fasting session was planned to marked the end of colonial rule in Nigeria.

The leader of the group, Bishop Sunday Garuba, said this year's anniversary marks an opportunity for religious leaders to intercede for Nigeria.

Garuba said it is important to note that Nigeria has remained united despite several seen and unseen attempts by the devil and his cohorts to cause division among the people.

He also said that for 60 years, Nigeria has been through many experiences in her people's quest for sustainable development in line with global standard.

"My beloved in Christ, the occasion of the 60th Anniversary celebration of Nigeria is indeed a big one for us in the Unity Church and the Unity Masjid because, over the years, we have taken the success of the Nigerian project to God in our various prayers and fasting programmes," Garuba said.

Recalling how 'the children of God' went to sleep during the country's 50th anniversary in 2010 and the devil struck with a bomb blast in the nation's capital, Garuba said a repeat of such should not be allowed to happen.

The cleric also assured Nigerians that the nation's diamond jubilee will usher an era of greatness like never before. 

He said with President Buhari on the seat and with fasting and prayers from the children of God, Nigeria would be free from every gang-up of hell aimed at destroying this nation. 

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government had said that the nation's 60th anniversary will be celebrated low-key.

The FG said Nigeria's 60th independence anniversary will be observed for a year and would be ending on September 30, 2021.

According to the FG, the theme for this year's celebration is “Together Shall We Be.”

In other news, 60 outstanding Nigerians will be honoured by a group, Project6060.

The group while announcing its plan said the Nigeria's Diamond Jubilee is a milestone that is widely celebrated and like any country getting up to sixty after independence.

The group said the nation has had her ups and downs and still standing tall and most be commended for this.

Speaking on the plan by the group honour 60 Nigeria, Balami Lazarus, one of the leaders of Project6060, said Nigeria has suffered a lot and part of the challenges the nation has survived as a nation is the prophetic projection of disintegration.

Lazarus said there would be a special publication which is aimed at celebrating outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavours and contributed immensely to the Nigerian project.
