High school career
After joining Orangeville prep, he became part of the school's team with his father as the assistant coach. Jamal and Thon Maker formed a duo that helped their team to defeat American schools.
In 2013, during the Jordan Brand Classic International Game, he was named MVP. This made him the second Canadian to win the award after Duane Notice. During the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit, Jamal scored a game-high 30 points. He was named MVP as well.

After the freshman season, he was named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press. He also made it to the All-SEC First Team and the SEC All-freshman Team. His 20.0 points in each game are the most by any freshman in the entire history of Kentucky's program.
