High school career

After joining Orangeville prep, he became part of the school's team with his father as the assistant coach. Jamal and Thon Maker formed a duo that helped their team to defeat American schools.

In 2013, during the Jordan Brand Classic International Game, he was named MVP. This made him the second Canadian to win the award after Duane Notice. During the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit, Jamal scored a game-high 30 points. He was named MVP as well.

In 2015, he was named MVP in the BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game. He then played the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball.

Jamal Murray college career

Jamal started his college career on 24th June 2015 after committing to Kentucky under the leadership of Coach John Calipari. During his freshman days between 2015 and 2016, Murray was featured on the Midseason Top 25 list for the John R Wooden Award. He was named to the 35-man midseason watchlist for the Naismith Trophy.
