Georginio Wijnaldum could still leave Liverpool this transfer window after he was said to have rejected a chance to extend his reign at Anfield.
The 29-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked to join the Catalans after the arrival of Ronald Koeman at the club.
Although his current deal with the Reds will expire in June 2021, he could part ways with the Merseyside outfit before the transfer market closes.
Jurgen Klopp recently completed the signing of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich - a move which further puts Wijnaldum's relationship with his present club under jeopardy.
Daily Star quoting Football Insider claims the Dutch midfielder has reportedly turned down a new deal from the Premier League champions.
The publication further stated that both parties are still negotiating on the new terms of the contract - with Wijnaldum wanting a long-term deal to run until 2024 or 2025 and a pay rise.
Liverpool, on the other hand, are not ready to meet the 29-year-old's demands and this could force the Dutchman to leave the club.
Consequently, Barcelona might not be able to make a move for the midfielder having being banned by La Liga according to reports because of the dire state of their financial situation.
Spanish clubs are now under strict guidelines due to the economic harshness caused by the coronavirus pandemic and Barca's £510m-a-year wage bill is considered unsustainable by La Liga.
This means that they will need to sell players in order to bring in new signings like Wijnaldum.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp seems unfazed with the situation after claiming he is relaxed about the player's future at Anfield.
Legit.ng earlier reported Liverpool striker Georginio Wijnaldum has branded the reports linking him with a move to the Spanish side, Barcelona, as rumoured ahead of the start of next football season.
The 29-year-old Dutchman has one more year on his current contract at the Premier League club and there have been reports that he could be leaving this summer.
He joined Liverpool four years ago from Newcastle, and Georginio Wijnaldum has become one of the most trusted soldiers Jurgen Klopp has at Anfield.
