Verdict: The claim that the portal showing the results of the Edo governorship election is fake is false. INEC indeed has an online portal for checking results. The electoral body has also uploaded the results of the Edo poll on the portal for the public to check.
As collation of results in the ongoing Edo governorship election continues, some Nigerians started tracking the results online via INEC's results viewing portal.
Ehimen Esekie tweeted:
“You can check the results ur self online real time. Website: http://inecelectionresults.com
"Sign up to have an account and that’s all. You can view the results of every polling unit as they are uploaded into this portal by INEC."
However, some others claimed that INEC does not have a website for viewing results, arguing that the website showing the results is fake.
The Classic Man tweeted:
“I cant (sic) believe people go to the extent of creating fake websites and they say its (sic) from INEC. And INEC has not mentioned about the website in any of their bulletins or pressers…”
Ogirima Ibrahim, another Twitter user, reacted, accusing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of being behind the alleged fake website.
“I'm really surprised people will go that far, posting results on an illegal inec website. This must be the handworks of PDP."
INEC had in August announced the launching of a portal where election results from polling units can be viewed in real-time; before the final collation.
The portal address is www.inecelectionresults.com. As the commission promised, the results of the ongoing Edo governorship poll have been uploaded on the portal.
Here is a step-by-step guide to check election results on INEC's online platform.
