The Edo guber to a large extent reminds Nigerians of the presidential poll of 1993 which many of them still regard as the best election so far in the country. But aside from the massive turnout of voters in support of Governor Godwin Obaseki, some underlying factors influenced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate's victory.

It was certain that the people of Edo loudly expressed their decision on whom they want as the helmsman of the state for the next four years.
In this piece, Legit.ng x-rays some of the major factors that acted as the game-changers in the electoral processes that led to the resounding and landslide victory of Obaseki, which include actions of major political players like Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Adams Oshiomhole, the former chairman of the ruling party.
Prior to the Edo gubernatorial primary, Oshiomhole set up a screening committee that disqualified the governor on the platform of the APC, a development that forced Obaseki to defect to the PDP.
Added to this, the fact that Oshiomhole backed the APC candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu seemed to have irritated the Edo voters who had initially witnessed how the former governor badmouthed the ruling party's flagbearer in the runoff to the 2016 governorship election.
This strange act of re-alignment on the part of Oshiomhole, no doubt, had a negative toll on the people's trust and confidence in the APC in the state.
Moreover, the call by Tinubu for Edo people to vote out Obaseki boomeranged as the viral video that captured the APC's leader's move inspired the reaction "Edo no be Lagos" among indigenes and residents of the state.
On his part, the Edo governor made a lot of drastic changes that relieved the burden of his people in various areas, the most talked about being the removal of thugs earlier used as agents for revenue collection in Benin, the state capital.
The end of the reign of the hoodlums meant a return of relief to commercial motorists, taxi drivers, shop owners and hawkers in the city.
Even more, the governor implemented the proscription of Community Development Association (CDA), and as such saved prospective land buyers from the trap of fraudsters in the system.
Naturally, this endeared the governor to commoners as he turned out to be a shield for them from oppressors.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Edo state chapter of the APC, Anselm Ojezua has explained why the defeat suffered by the party in the just concluded governorship election in the state can be partly blamed on Oshiomhole and the national organ of the party.
Ojezua made the statement when reacting to the victory of Godwin Obaseki of the PDP in the Edo governorship election.
