FG says COVID-19 vaccines will not be available until 2021

- Nigeria's health minister, Ehanire, has cautioned Nigerians against abandoning Covid-19 prevention measures

- Ehanire said it is important to continue observing the measures as Covid-19 vaccine will not be available until 2021

- The minister also appealed to striking health workers to call off the strike and resume negotiation with the federal government

The federal government has cautioned Nigerians not to abandon necessary Covid-19 prevention measures as vaccines will not be available until 2021.

Channels TV reported that the minister of health, Osagie Ehanire, made this known during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Thursday, September 17, in Abuja.

“Vaccines will not be available until next year at best. No reliable therapeutics has been confirmed but our country must restart businesses, including travel to allow citizens to earn their livelihood,” the minister said.

“Compliance with all the recommended measures like wearing your masks, social distancing, avoiding gatherings etc will go a long way to help."

The minister also appealed to the striking health workers to call off their industrial actions, noting that the best way to settle industrial disputes is to come to negotiate with the federal government.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the leadership of the Joint Health Sector Unions(JOHESU) on Sunday, September 13, instructed its workers throughout Nigeria to down their tools.

JOHESU disclosed that is latest decision came after the federal government in a conciliatory meeting held on Saturday, September 12, failed to give a concrete promise to meet its conditions. According to the health union, the nationwide strike will commence from the night of Sunday.

In another report, the federal government said Nigeria is winning the war against the novel coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The PTF affirmed that Nigeria has begun flattening the curve of the spread of the virus.

Legit.ng gathered that this was disclosed by the chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, in Abuja during a media briefing.

He, however, also warned that the observed success should be taken with vigilance, reminding all that the reopening of international flights and other parts of economic activities could endanger the success so far gained as being careless could lead to a second wave of the disease.
