The plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stage a comeback in Adamawa in 2023 general elections on Thursday, September 17, suffered a huge setback.
Leadership reports that the former acting governor of the state, James Barka, dumped the APC for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Legit.ng gathered that Barka who defected alongside many other defectors said his decision followed wide consultation after carefully studied the feat recorded by the present leadership in the state.
Barka said he was attracted back to the PDP based on unprecedented developmental projects by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri within the last one year in office.
He said: “I’ve always been a PDP man. Under their party, I was elected member of the state Assembly and I became the speaker. Under the same PDP, I became acting governor and later ambassador.
“I only veered off into the APC, leaving my teeming supporters behind. I’ve returned home. I am impressed with Fintiri's achievement within a short time."
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri who received the former speaker said the door of PDP is wide open to accommodate all progressive-minded people who wanted to join him in moving the state forward, adding that his administration would continue with people-oriented projects.
The PDP organising secretary in the state, Hamza Madagali, said that Fintiri’s achievement would continue to be the winning card of the PDP in any election.
He commended Barka for taking a bold step and return to the PDP family, stressing that Fintiri remain consistent with his agenda of developing the state.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that PDP in Adamawa state might find it difficult to retain the state in 2023 if the political realignment embarked upon by the leaders of APC eventually yielded positive results.
It was reported that some respected indigenes of the state including the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha and his predecessor, David Babachir, were working towards reclaiming the state during the next general election.
