Fast forwards to two decades after, the Argentine forward has written his name in the history books of the club as well as the Spanish League as a whole.

The 33-year-old forward broke into the Catalans senior team in 2004 and 16 years later, he stands as their highest goals scorer record holder.

The Argentine is the player with the most trophies in the history of Barcelona with 34 silverware - two more than former teammate Andrés Iniesta, who won 32 with the club.

Barcelona's all-time top goalscorer

Messi first equaled the club's top 232 goals record previously held by Cesar Rodríguez in official matches in 2012.

He then went ahead to triple the number as he currently has 634 and that will definitely increase when the season kicks off in a few days' time.

La Liga's all-time top scorer

The Barcelona captain became Spanish League's all-time goals scorer after overtaking Telmo Zarra (Athletic Club, 1940-55) on November 22, 2014.

Top scorer in a single LaLiga season

In 2011/12, he scored 50 LaLiga goals. This is the most for any player in the Spanish top flight.

LaLiga's top hat trick scorer

Messi has scored more hat tricks (35) than any other player in LaLiga history. He overtook Ronaldo record (34) after scoring three goals in his side's 5-2 win over Mallorca on December 7, 2019.

Most Ballon d'Or awards

After winning his first Ballon d'Or in 2009, he has gone ahead to win five more - becoming the only player to have achieved such feat. Next to him is Cristiano Ronaldo with five awards.

Messi is also the winner of more Pichichi awards than anybody else. Last season was his seventh -one more than Telmo Zarra.

On March 7, 2012, Messi scored five times for Barça in a single game. The feat was replicated by Shaktar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano in 2014.

Most goals in a calendar year

In 2012, for Barça and Argentina, Messi scored 91 goals - beating a record previously held by Gerd Müller.

El Clasico's top scorer of all-time

In the biggest game in Spain, Messi has scored 26 times in total. His record against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu is 15 goals, more than his return at any other away ground.

Longest scoring run in LaLiga

From November 2012 to May of 2013, he scored in 21 consecutive LaLiga games.
